 J1/J2 FIS Programs Minimize

The J1 (ages 15 - 16) and J2 (ages 17 - 19) age categories are supported by Sask Alpine from two perspectives.

For those youth that are wanting more training and racing than offered by their club programs, but cannot make the priority investment of time, finances, and skill improvement demanded by a full-fledged FIS program (as recommended by Alpine Canada), Sask Alpine will support a provincial program. This is reflected in the J1/J2/FIS provincial program.

For those youth stepping up to a full-fledged FIS program offered by out-of-province clubs and organizations as part of their pursuit of an alpine ski career, Sask Alpine provides a bursary program.

More details on the programs and the current enrollment and other information is provided below.

For more information about the Provincial teams program please contact Alpine Saskatchewan at 306-780-9236; or email at: office@saskalpine.com.

The FIS Bursary Program provides an opportunity to those youth that have a goal and have demonstrated the commitment and skills to pursue alpine ski racing as a sport career. This program allows the Sask Alpine youth to remain part of Alpine Saskatchewan, gain access to Saskatchewan-specific funding and benefits, while joining in with an out-of-province club or organization to further their career. Generally it must be demonstrated that the out-of-province programs provide opportunities for the youth to pursue their goals that the Saskatchewan programs and clubs are unable to fulfill.

To assist in this regard, Sask Alpine has established relationships with Albert Alpine clubs and organizations that can be joined in this regard. In addition, a relationship with Alberta Alpine has also been established such that an Alpine Saskatchewan athlete can join the Alberta Provincial Ski Team subject to the spots being available and the meeting of that ski team's entry requirements.

 J1/J2/FIS Program Minimize

This program will provide the J1/J2 aged youth an opportunity to participate in additional mountain camps, some FIS races, and have a dedicated coach for the remainder of this season that enhances the programs they may have within their respective clubs. The goals of the program are:

  • Provide an opportunity to maintain or marginally improve the alpine ski skills through additional training camps and races.
  • Have an opportunity to enter a limited number of FIS starts in races that correlate to the level of training provided.
  • Provide a 'bridge' to 1st and 2nd year J1 racers while they consider a more intense and focused alpine ski sport career through the Sask Alpine FIS bursary program.

In addition, many of the youth participating in this program are expected to use the opportunity to improve their skills and better their chances to qualify for the 2011 Canada Winter Games.

As a provincial program, this program is open to all qualified J1 and J2 aged athletes in Sask Alpine provincial clubs. Youth are encouraged to discuss the option of being nominated by their club head coaches for available positions. Approval to join the program team as a regular member, or to participate in specific camps, is subject to the discretion of the program coach.
